Italy delivers one of the most complete and versatile yachting experiences in the Mediterranean. Its cruising grounds combine cultural depth with geographic diversity—from the structured elegance of Amalfi and the unspoiled stretches of Sardinia to Tuscany’s coastal vineyards and the navigable waters around Venice. The extended charter season is supported by a broad fleet selection and flexible itineraries. For experienced charterers, Italy delivers both infrastructure and freedom, making it a cornerstone of Mediterranean yachting.

Italy Yacht Charters: What You Need to Know

Along Italy’s 7,200-kilometer coastline, yachting becomes a journey through contrast and beauty. One day it's gliding past Portofino’s pastel villas; the next, tracing the raw volcanic edges of Sicily. A yacht here isn't just a vessel, but a private front-row seat to seaside villages, ancient harbors, and quiet coves unseen from land. Whether it's drifting between the Tuscan islands or anchoring beneath Capri’s limestone cliffs—chartering in Italy is less about travel and more about immersion. It’s a region where elegance and heritage blend, and every vista brings the sense of something unforgettable just ahead.

Italy’s yachting gems unfold like a story along the coast. On the Amalfi Coast, Positano and Ravello cling to cliffs above cobalt waters. These towns are ideal for itineraries that mix Michelin-starred dining with historical landmarks. Capri remains a perennial favorite—both for its Blue Grotto and luxury boutiques. Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda delivers privacy and polished service especially during the high season. Its beaches and marinas are among the finest in the Mediterranean. Further north, the Ligurian Riviera features Cinque Terre and Portofino—compact yet iconic stops rich in visual drama and old-world charm. The Adriatic side—especially Puglia—is a perfect place for those who crave authentic coastal towns, distinctive cuisine, and fewer crowds. Venice, despite its complexity as a cruising destination, offers an experience like no other, pairing historic opulence with lagoon navigation.

Renowned Marinas in Italy

Italy is renowned for its well-developed marina infrastructure. Here is a list of the country’s five most outstanding marinas.

Nearby, Marina di Porto Rotondo is a bit smaller—with 650 berths. It’s prized for high-quality maintenance and easy access to hidden anchorages, a favorite return spot for seasoned charterers seeking both comfort and discovery.

Down on the mainland, Porto Lotti in La Spezia has around 500 berths for yachts up to 100m. Ideal for those eager to explore the breathtaking Cinque Terre, this marina caters to large yachts and provides a full spectrum of shore-side amenities.

On the isle of Capri, the Marina di Capri pulses with energy despite its compact size. With 300 berths in high demand and full-service facilities, it’s often booked well ahead of summer.

Further south, there is Marina di Ragusa in Sicily that has around 700 berths and grants prime access to the island’s southern coastline.

Cost of Yacht Charters in Italy

Charter rates in Italy depend on several factors—yacht size, travel dates, and the duration of the charter. High season (May to October) coincides with the region’s ideal sailing conditions, attracting more visitors and pushing prices upward; shoulder seasons, especially April and November, offer more flexibility and better deals, especially for early bookings. A week-long itinerary is typical. Longer bookings, in turn, may come with reduced daily rates.

Italy applies a 22% VAT to the charter fee. Additionally, most charters require an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA)—typically 35–40% of the charter fee—covers operational costs such as fuel, provisions, and crew expenses. Any unused funds are refunded, while any overages are invoiced separately.

From May to October, Italy's charter season unfolds in waves. July and August are the peak months — the sun is high, harbors are buzzing, and coastal towns come alive with festivals and flair. Those who want more privacy and serenity without sacrificing sunshine will find May, June, and September more appealing. During these months, the sea calms, crowds thin, and the days stretch warm and clear. In October, the majority of tourists drift away, but the weather holds, inviting longer, more intimate voyages. Throughout, the winds stay kind, guiding yachts smoothly from one storied shore to the next.
