PALMER JOHNSON HISTORY
Palmer Johnson began as Johnson and Gmack, specializing in repairing rowing skiffs and wooden fishing vessels before launching its first yacht in 1928. Renamed in 1956 after Palmer Johnson — the founder’s son — the yard became a pioneer in aluminum yacht construction, delivering the groundbreaking Isanti in 1962. The following decades saw record-setters like Firebird and Fortuna — the latter commissioned by King Juan Carlos of Spain, famed as the fastest yacht of her era. In 1998, Palmer Johnson launched La Baronessa, the largest all-aluminum yacht ever built in the U.S. After a sale to Timur Mohamed in 2003, the shipyard introduced the acclaimed SportYacht and later SuperSport series. Despite innovation, rising competition led to the closure of its U.S. facilities in 2015, with production shifting to Europe. In recent years, the yard partnered with Bugatti and also presented ambitious concepts (such as the 229-meter Valkyrie) to demonstrate that Palmer Johnson continues to have dreams about yacht design.
