Damen Yachting's heritage goes back to Vlissingen, the Dutch city of shipbuilding for over 700 years, where shipyards have been building warships and trading vessels since the 14th century. Amels was founded in 1918 in Makkum and began by building small wooden and steel boats before expanding into larger commercial vessels and luxury yachts in the 1970s (its first luxury yacht was KATALINA). The Damen family purchased Amels in 1991, but the company continued its reputation for quality and craftsmanship. Damen purchased the historic Royal Schelde yard in 2000, as the company expanded into Vlissingen and continued the Dutch tradition of shipbuilding. Damen Yachting is currently a family business and a world leader in luxury yachts, with Rose Damen as Managing Director.
