Renowned Marinas in Sri Lanka

The island offers several top marinas and anchorages that provide excellent facilities and unique experiences for charterers

The Colombo International Marina, located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s bustling capital, is the country’s premier marina. It can accommodate yachts up to 60m. in length, with a capacity for around 50 vessels. This marina stands out for its modern infrastructure and comprehensive services, including refit and repair facilities, fueling, customs clearance, provisioning, and 24/7 security.

For those seeking a more laid-back experience, Mirissa Bay on the south coast offers superb anchorage options without formal marina infrastructure. While services are limited, local boat operators provide fuel and provisioning support.

Cost of Yacht Charters in Sri Lanka

Yacht charter prices in Sri Lanka can vary significantly depending on several key factors, including the type of yacht, length of the charter, and time of year. The peak season typically runs from October to March. During these high-demand months, rates tend to be at their highest due to optimal sailing conditions and increased tourist activity.

Charters are generally priced on a daily or weekly basis, though custom durations can often be arranged depending on availability. Longer charters may qualify for discounted rates. Booking well in advance is recommended, especially during the high season, to ensure access to the best yachts and more favorable pricing terms.

In accordance with Sri Lankan tax regulations, an 18% Value Added Tax (VAT) is applied to the charter fee. Additionally, most luxury charters require an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), typically 30–40% of the charter cost. The APA covers variable expenses such as fuel, provisioning, mooring fees, and other onboard consumables. Any unused portion of the APA is refunded after the charter ends, while any additional costs are invoiced separately to maintain transparency.

Best Time for Yacht Charter in Sri Lanka

The best time to visit Sri Lanka by sea is between October and March, when the weather is predominantly dry, and temperatures remain comfortably above 20°C, even during the coolest months. This period aligns with the island’s peak tourist season, especially around Christmas and New Year, when demand for yacht charters and accommodations surges  -  early booking is highly advisable.

To avoid the effects of the southwest monsoon, which typically brings heavy rains and rough seas from April to September, it's best to plan and secure the yacht charter well in advance of the high season, ideally by late summer or early autumn.
